Most drivers realize they should move over when they see a police car with flashing lights parked along the road. And I’m glad they do. But did you know that drivers should also move over for tow trucks?
The Minnesota Department of Transportation issued this reminder:
“… on a road with two or more lanes, drivers must move over one full lane from stopped emergency vehicles that have their flashing lights activated.
That includes ambulance, fire, law enforcement, maintenance, construction vehicles and tow trucks.
If it is not safe to move over, the driver should slow down.” (Emphasis added.)
A Minnesota statute called the Ted Foss Move Over Law requires this courtesy. The law was named after a State Patrol trooper who was hit in 2000. So when you’re driving and you see flashing lights along the side of the road, please remember to move over a lane.
